These diagrams illustrate the evolution of the camera since its invention in 1839.

q1 001The first camera ,the Daguerreotype was invented in 1839.It consisted of 2 parts:a rectangular wooden box and brass optical head, cylindrical in shape. The Daguerreotype was 36 cm in length, the biggest camera in the camera’s existence.

In 1888,Kodak launched its first camera which was the next stage in the camera’s development. It was a metal rectangular box, which was 16 cm in length, less than half the size of the previous one, the  Daguerreotype. The Kodak camera had some changes, for example an optical hole instead of a brass head.

37 years later,a more modern type of camera was introduced to the world by Leica. It was shaped like a rectangle as well and made of metal, and was 14 cm in length. The Leica N1 was slightly smaller in size than the Kodak N1,but more complex in structure, with some buttons on it.

An up-to-date digital camera appeared in 2000.It kept the rectangular shape ,but became the smallest over the whole period,4 times smaller than its predecessor, the  Daguerreotype, with the largest length of 8 cm.The external covering tends to be made of plastic and there are new innovations included, such us zoom lens,LCD screen and Internet connection.

In conclusion, during their evolution the camera’s size has changed becoming smaller, but at the same time having more complex structure.
